What is purge gas?

I just started working at the design institute, and I’ll be taking on my first project in a few days. After reviewing the detailed design, I’m not sure what \"purge gas\" refers to; could everyone please give me some guidance?
Are you referring to the blowing gas in a gas generation furnace?
It should be used for purging, such as back-purging filters; steam is commonly used for this purpose.
The purge gas in synthesis should refer to the vent gas.
