The overall direction of steam flow in an axial flow turbine is roughly parallel to the shaft ; The overall direction of steam flow in a radial-flow turbine is roughly perpendicular to the axis of rotation ; In a peripheral-flow turbine, the steam flows roughly in the direction of the turbine circumference; such turbines are generally smaller in size.
