What is the allowable limit for methanol content in the acidic gas fed into sulfur recovery, and what are the impacts on the combustion in the acidic gas furnace and the subsequent equipment? This post was last edited by Ma Hai on 2009-3-24 12:42]
A high methanol content makes it easy to produce green sulfur; nowadays, a washing tower is generally used before sulfur recovery. As for the extent to which this can be controlled, it is not yet clear. In the absence of a scrubber tower, attention must be paid to the effectiveness of the ammonia cooler for treating acidic gases at the top outlet of the methanol wash regeneration tower. If there is water in our ammonia system, the performance of the ammonia cooler deteriorates, and green sulfur is likely to be produced.
With a methanol content of 0.1% (molar), it’s not clear whether the green sulfur mentioned above will be formed.
I recently heard from experienced people that it’s 300 ppm; if it’s above 300 ppm, a methanol washing tower needs to be installed before entering the Claus unit
