What knowledge does a DCS operator need to learn?
These are merely my immature personal opinions for reference only: Since one is an operator, it is of course necessary to be familiar with the process flow, to study the P&ID diagrams, to learn the operating procedures, as well as the procedures for dealing with emergencies and related interlock systems. One should also go to the site to get to know the locations of the main pipelines and valves, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of the production process. It is important to understand the impact of one’s own tasks on the operations in upstream and downstream processes. This is the most basic. Furthermore, by integrating relevant knowledge from the chemical engineering field, it is possible to identify shortcomings in the operating methods, explore optimal operating conditions, identify potential bottlenecks in this device, and improve the plans for starting up and shutting down the system. Have an understanding or familiarity with the basic knowledge of instrumentation, PID control, and be able to perform basic PID tuning. Understanding the basic principles of the sensors on site, such as the significant lag in temperature sensing elements, helps with operation; learning the basic knowledge of interlocks aids in understanding the relationship between interlocks and the manufacturing process.
Are you referring to the users of the control system or its maintenance staff? Their tasks are different. Users only need to understand the basic processes and know how to operate the system; there is no need for them to have in-depth knowledge. Maintenance staff, on the other hand, must be familiar with the hardware as well as basic software programming. If the system being maintained is complex, they need to learn more or maintain contact with the integrator

If it’s a process technician, the main requirement is to be familiar with the processes, and basic operational skills are sufficient; whereas for an instrumentation engineer, it’s necessary to be familiar with DCS configuration as well as knowledge related to automation principles and other specialized areas in this field.

The process flow is of primary importance. Just like when driving a car, it’s necessary to quickly take appropriate actions based on road conditions; being able to use the brakes or accelerator skillfully is crucial. Yet it’s also possible to assess the current state of the vehicle by considering the readings on the dashboard and one’s own feelings.
It’s just like trading stocks online: first, you need to know how to trade stocks, and second, you need to be able to use stock trading software. Therefore, you need to be proficient in the process flow, understand DCS operations, and have a basic knowledge of DCS configuration. That should be fine.
