Generally, we often talk about high-sulfur oil and low-sulfur oil. What are the sulfur content ranges for high-sulfur oil and low-sulfur oil?
Low-sulfur crude oil with 2.0% sulfur content
Crude oil contains varying amounts of sulfides. Crude oil with a sulfur content of less than 0.1% is generally referred to as ultra-low sulfur crude oil ； Crude oil with a sulfur content of 0.1–0.5% is called low-sulfur crude oil ； Crude oil with a sulfur content of more than 0.5% is considered sulfur-containing crude oil. Crudes with a sulfur content greater than 1.0% are considered high-sulfur crude oils. The sulfides in crude oil mainly include thiols (R—SH), thioethers (R—S—R), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), polysulfides (RmSn), elemental sulfur, etc.
Low-sulfur crude oil: sulfur content < 0.5%. Sulfur-containing crude oil: sulfur content 0.5%–2.0%. High-sulfur crude oil: sulfur content > 2.0%
In fact, there is no clear definition as to whether high-sulfur crude oil refers to those with a sulfur content of more than 1% or 2%; **the industry has not established any corresponding standard for this, as sulfur contamination at 1% already results in significant sulfur corrosion at high temperatures. At the end of the 1990s, crude oils with a sulfur content of over 1% were considered high-sulfur crude oils, but as crude oils have become heavier and of lower quality, their sulfur content has continued to rise. Moreover, domestic crude oil has a higher nitrogen content and a lower sulfur content compared to foreign crude oil. As the proportion of imported crude oil increases, the sulfur content in crude oil used by various refineries is rising year by year; therefore, it is more realistic to consider crude oil with a sulfur content of over 2% as high-sulfur crude oil.
Most crude oil in China today is low-sulfur, while crude oil abroad generally has a higher sulfur content. Low-sulfur crude oil has a sulfur content of <0.5%; sulfur-containing crude oil has a sulfur content of 0.5%–2.0%; high-sulfur crude oil has a sulfur content of >2.0%
SH/T 3129---2002 specifies as follows: 2.1 Sour crude oil refers to crude oil with a total sulfur content of 1.0% (by weight) or more. It includes crude oils with high sulfur and low acid value, as well as crude oils with high sulfur and high acid value. 2.2 High sulfur low acid value crude oil: Crude oil with a total sulfur content of 1.0% or more (on a weight basis) and an acid value of 0.5 mgKOH/g or less. 2.3 High sulfide and high acid content crude oil: Crude oil with a total sulfur content of 1.0% or more (on a weight basis) and an acid number of more than 0.5 mgKOH/g.
