Welding procedure qualification for 50,000-liter tanks – I. Tank bottom: Four sets of weld qualification tests. 1. Butt weld of the edge plates: Welding method – manual welding for the root pass, submerged arc automatic welding for the fill pass, and cover welding. Base material: 16MnR + 16MnR; Welding method: Stick arc welding; Welding rod: E5015, Φ4.0mm; Welding process: Submerged arc automatic welding; Welding wire: H08MnA, Φ3.2mm; Flux: HJ431.2. Butt welds of edge plates and middle plates: Base material: 16MnR (16mm) + Q235B (10mm); Welding methods: Carbon dioxide gas shielded welding + submerged arc automatic welding (with crushed welding wire); Carbon dioxide gas shielded welding: Welding wire: ER50-6, Φ1.2; Submerged arc automatic welding: Welding wire: H08A, Φ4.0mm; Flux: HJ431; Crushed welding wire: METAL GRIRS, Φ1.0×1.0mm.
3. Butt welds of middle plates: Base material: Q235B + Q235B; Welding methods: Carbon dioxide gas shielded welding + submerged arc automatic welding (with crushed welding wire); Carbon dioxide gas shielded welding: Welding wire: ER50-6, Φ1.2; Submerged arc automatic welding: Welding wire: H08A, Φ4.0mm; Flux: HJ431; Crushed welding wire: METAL GRIRS, Φ1.0×1.0mm.
4. Corner joints between the first layer of the tank wall and the tank bottom edge plates: Welding methods: Stick arc welding + submerged arc automatic welding; Base material: 16MnR + 16MnR; Stick arc welding: Welding rod: E5015, Φ4.0mm; Submerged arc automatic welding: Welding wire: H08MnA, Φ3.2mm; Flux: HJ431.
II. Tank wall – Seven groups of welding evaluations:
1. Longitudinal welds of the tank wall: Automatic gas shielded welding (gas-electric vertical welding); Welding wire: DWS‑43G, Φ1.6mm; Base material: 16MnR; Thickness: 22mm; Preheating before welding: ≥100°C.
2. Longitudinal welds of the tank wall: Automatic gas shielded welding (gas-electric vertical welding); Welding wire: DWS‑43G, Φ1.6mm; Base material: 16MnR; Thickness: 14mm.
3. Longitudinal welds of the tank wall: Automatic gas shielded welding (gas-electric vertical welding); Welding wire: DWS‑43G, Φ1.6mm; Base material: Q235B; Thickness: 10mm.
4. Transverse welds of the tank wall: Submerged arc automatic welding; Base material: 16MnR; Thickness: 22mm; Preheating before welding: ≥100°C; Welding wire: H08MnA, Φ3.2mm; Flux: SJ101.
5. Transverse welds of the tank wall: Submerged arc automatic welding; Base material: 16MnR; Thickness: 14mm; Welding wire: H08MnA, Φ3.2mm; Flux: SJ101.
6. Transverse welds of the tank wall: Submerged arc automatic welding; Base material: 16MnR + Q235B; Thickness: 10mm; Welding wire: H08MnA, Φ3.2mm; Flux: SJ101.
