In our newly installed methanol distillation unit, safety valves are installed on all the outlet pipelines for circulating water, with a setting pressure of 0.6 MPAG each. What is the purpose of this? The operating pressure in distillation processes is generally lower than that of the circulating water, so these safety valves are not meant to prevent leaks. Moreover, in cold regions like ours, such safety valves tend to freeze in winter and thus fail to function properly. Could experts please advise whether it would be appropriate to remove them?
If the safety valve is installed at the outlet of the heat exchanger’s circulating water, then it should indeed be there to prevent the heat exchanger from bursting.
Asking for it is useless; it’s better to cancel; And it’s not needed for security purposes.
It prevents pure methanol from leaking into the circulating water inside the heat exchange tubes, which could lead to overpressure and accidents, as well as preventing overpressure in the circulating water.
This is how I handled it: for the conversion system and compression system, in areas where the pressure is relatively high (where the pressure of the fluid in the shell side is high), safety valves were retained on the pipelines at the circulating water outlet side, with a setting pressure of 1.0 MPa. In areas where the pressure of the fluid in the shell side is lower, such as in the distillation system, the safety valves on the pipelines at the circulating water outlet side were removed. I’m not sure if it’s appropriate? Is there a master who can give guidance?
It is not necessary to install a safety valve on the circulating water in the distillation system; it can be removed.
