A flame arrester is necessary; regular cleaning will prevent it from getting clogged
Since we mainly act as agents for imported flame arrestors, in a situation like yours it’s best to use a flame arrester. However, the gas may contain small solid particles; since our flame arrestors are quite small, around 1 inch in size, they can easily get clogged. It’s best to install a filter in front of them. If the diameter of the pipeline is large, then the flame arrestor can be cleaned regularly.
Personal opinion: Fire arrestors must definitely be added, because if backflow occurs at the burner, the damage caused will be even greater!
If it’s gas, I don’t think it’s necessary; a higher-level interlock system can be used. The pressure of gas is much higher than that in the furnace, so backflow basically won’t occur. Of course, a differential pressure interlock can be installed; when the differential pressure is low, the gas valve can be closed. Generally, gas valves are equipped with double-check valves. Of course, for safety reasons, the pressure difference value for interlocking can be set at a higher level
