Is it necessary to conduct V-notch Charpy impact tests on bolts and nuts? I see that it is specified on some drawings, but I don’t understand the reason behind it.
Generally, when the operating temperature of studs is below or equal to -20 degrees Celsius, a low-temperature impact test at that operating temperature is conducted, mainly to assess the plasticity of the studs at low temperatures
It seems that nuts aren’t necessary; when impact is required, bolts are generally not suitable, and instead double-headed studs should be used.
If it is specified on the drawing, then it needs to be done. Because bolts and nuts can also be subjected to impact loads, their impact resistance is required.
The fasteners selected are generally matched to the operating conditions, or similar conditions are found for reference without conducting tests; it seems that the operating conditions in question are quite severe. How to conduct an impact test? I think the supplier should provide impact test specimens made from the same material as the bolts (stud) and nuts, and then entrust a specialized institution to conduct the tests, or the supplier could carry out the testing themselves.
