Some people use this formula: 0.255Da-0.635s, where Da: outer diameter of the shell; s: Shell wall thickness. Does anyone know the source? Appendix JB4746-2002 only provides the depth values without indicating how to calculate them; so how are the tables in the appendix created?
According to Section 4 of JB4746-2002, Table 1 in the parameters and markings section: for a butterfly head, R1=1.0D1, and thus the depth of the head can be calculated easily. Calculate it yourself.
I did the calculations; it should be based on R1=0.8D1, but the result I got was only 0.255D–0.51s – I still couldn’t obtain the coefficient of 0.635. Have you done the calculations yourself? Could you share it?
The formula for calculating the depth of a dish-shaped head is: H = Rc(1 – sinβ) + r*sinβ, where Rc is the radius of the sphere, r is the radius of the transition section, and β is the angle between the line connecting the intersection point of the sphere and the transition section with the center of the circle, and the diameter of the dish-shaped head; this angle is related to the ratios of the radii of the sphere and the transition section to the radius of the head.
