What is a pile? What are the aspects involved in pile driving? A pile refers to a columnar support element that is sunk (driven) or poured into the foundation, such as wooden piles, steel piles, concrete piles, etc. Piling operations are described separately for the following types of piles: (1) Wooden piles: Wooden piles are usually made from pine or fir; their diameter at the smaller end is generally 160–260 mm, and their length ranges from 4 to 6 meters. Piles have a low self-weight, possess certain elasticity and toughness, and are easy to process, transport, and construct. Piles are durable in shallow water, but they rot easily in an environment with alternating wet and dry conditions; therefore, they should be driven 0.5 m below the lowest groundwater level. Due to the low load-bearing capacity of piles and supply issues with timber, they are now only used in timber-producing areas and for certain emergency projects. An iron hoop should be installed at the top of the wooden pile to prevent it from cracking, and the pile tip is shaped into a pyramid, often fitted with an iron pile shoe. (2) Driving reinforced concrete piles: Piles are driven in (by driving or vibration) using pre-fabricated reinforced concrete piles, which include solid circular piles and square piles (with a few being rectangular), as well as hollow tubular piles; there are also tube columns (used for tube column foundations). The cross-sectional shape, size, and length of precast concrete piles can be selected within a certain range as required, with cross-sections available in various shapes such as square and circular. The side length of the cross-section of ordinary solid square piles is generally 300–500 mm, while the length of piles prefabricated on site is usually within 25–30 m. The segment length of precast piles in factories generally does not exceed 12m; during pile driving, they are connected on-site to the desired length. (3) Prestressed concrete pipe piles are manufactured using the pretensioning prestressing technique and centrifugal forming method. PHC pipe piles are produced through high-pressure steam curing, with the concrete strength grade of their pile bodies being C80 or higher than C80 ; Those that have not undergone high-pressure steam curing are PC pipe piles, with the concrete strength grade of their pile bodies ranging from C60 to C80 (approximately). The outer diameter of PHC and PC pipe piles commonly used in construction projects is 300–600 mm, with a segment length of 5–13 m. The lower end of the pile is equipped with an open steel pile tip or a closed cross-bladed steel pile tip. During pile driving, the pile sections are extended by welding end plates. (4) Driving steel pipe piles: Commonly used steel pipe piles include those with an open or closed lower end, as well as H-shaped steel pipe piles. The diameter of ordinary steel pipe piles is 250–1200 mm. H-shaped steel pipe piles have strong penetration capacity and low self-weight; they exhibit good performance when driven in using hammers, as well as high load-bearing capacity. They are convenient for lifting, transporting, driving in, and connecting. Their drawback is high steel consumption and high costs. It is only used in a few major projects in our country.

A piling gate bridge is a modular piling equipment, generally consisting of an operating platform formed by combining boats, along with 4 to 6 piling machines, lifting devices, and other auxiliary equipment. It can drive 4 to 6 piles at the same time, and some of them can also have their pile heads sawed flat
