How can undergraduates adapt to the requirements of work? In a chemical plant, on the one hand, managers consider you to be a college graduate and expect quick progress in your work; on the other hand, the supervisors on the job are reluctant to teach you much, giving you as little information as possible. I tried to find a job about three times. The first time, I found a job at home working with polyurethane materials – it involved manufacturing molds, and there was no future in that job, so I quit. The second time, through the school’s recommendations, I ended up working with highly toxic pesticide intermediates; I worked there for three days before quitting because it was harmful to my health. Build good relationships with your mentors and supervisors; once those relationships are strong, everything becomes easier to handle
If your background is quite different from that required in this industry but you still want to work there, then you’ll have time to study in your spare time – things like the principles of chemistry and chemical processing processes; in short, anything that can be useful.
