Can membrane separation technology be used to separate methane for the production of methanol?

Some people say there is a technique that allows methane to be separated from syngas without the need for a conversion furnace; the separated methane can be used as city gas, while the remaining synthetic methanol is perfect for other purposes I’ve never heard of that; if there’s hydrogen recovery and methane separation, then that shouldn’t be a problem, right?
Membrane separation is a rather poor method of separation; it cannot completely separate any gas. Moreover, the amount of methane present in syngas is very limited, so it’s impossible to use it to produce city gas.
So what other methods are there, apart from conversion, to separate methane from syngas? The methane content in the syngas I have is low, as it’s produced from coal!
