In coal tar processing projects, for the tubular heating furnaces used for tar and industrial naphthalene, what are the advantages and disadvantages of using vertical tubes versus coiled tubes? What materials are generally used?
The devices I have come into contact with are all vertical pipes. The advantages are a simple structure and uniform heating. The downside is high resistance. 1Cr18Ni9Ti is used for tar, while 20G and Cr5Mo are used for industrial naphthalene.
Early domestic tubular furnaces generally used vertical tubes; the advantage was that coking and blockages could be removed, but the resistance was high and the thermal efficiency was low. Most of the new tar processing units installed in recent years use spiral coils, which offer low resistance, thorough heating, and high thermal efficiency; the downside is that once they get clogged, the coils have to be replaced. Our company uses double-helix coils; the material for the radiation section is 0Cr18Ni10Ti, while that for the convection section is 20Cr25Ni
