Is the calorific value of clean coke oven gas higher or that of petroleum and natural gas?
The average lower heating value is 41.87 MJ/kg for oil, 38.97 MJ/kg for natural gas, while it is 17–18 MJ/kg for gas
The main components of coke oven gas are 50%~60% hydrogen and 25%~30% methane, whereas petroleum and natural gas consist mainly of methane. Based on these composition values, as the colleague from Sichuan mentioned, petroleum and natural gas have a much higher calorific value than gas.
Of course, oil and gas have a high calorific value, and natural gas has a much higher calorific value than coke oven gas.
When oil and gas are mixed with a certain proportion of air (being careful to stay within their explosive limit during mixing), their calorific value is equivalent to that of coke oven gas, and they can be used for heating ovens, especially the first coke oven in a newly established coking plant.
The main component of furnace gas is hydrogen, whereas petroleum and natural gas mainly consist of methane. Since methane has a higher calorific value than hydrogen, the calorific value of petroleum and natural gas is much higher than that of hydrogen. In fact, the calorific value of a mixed gas is calculated based on the composition of the gas and the sum of the combustion calorific values of each individual component. Multiply the percentage of each component by its calorific value and then add them together.
