How to maintain batteries, and how to charge and discharge them after long-term use.
1. The battery must not come into contact with flames, heat sources, or alkaline substances, and should be protected from direct sunlight, as this will shorten its lifespan. 2. A dedicated charger must be used to charge the battery to avoid damaging it. 3. Charging time: 6 hours in summer, 8 hours in winter. 4. After driving in summer, it is not advisable to charge the battery immediately due to its high temperature. In winter, it’s in degrees Celsius. Below 0°C, the battery is in a low-temperature state, and charging should be done indoors. 5. Used batteries, if not in use, should be fully charged before storage, and charged approximately once a month to ensure their service life.
The charging time for a battery is generally 8-10 hours; it should not be overcharged. The discharge amount should generally not be less than 20% of the total charge. If it is left for an extended period of time (usually half a year), it should be charged and discharged once. Keep the surface of the battery clean at all times.
I. How to maintain batteries 1. What precautions should be taken when maintaining batteries in winter? How to check the battery fluid level and add distilled water? Please note the following points: (1) Regularly check the charging level of the battery, and charge it as soon as possible while minimizing discharge to prevent the battery from cracking due to freezing. (2) Before winter, take measures to insulate the battery; if necessary, apply a protective cover to keep it warm. Check and adjust the electrolyte density to meet the requirements of the season. (3) After adding distilled water to the battery, the engine should be started immediately for charging, in order to prevent the newly added distilled water on the plates from freezing. (4) In extremely cold conditions, when the car is not used for an extended period of time, the battery should be placed in a dry indoor area. The liquid level in each cell of the battery should be 10~15 mm above the plates. The liquid level should be checked regularly; if it is below the specified value, appropriate distilled water should be added, and tap water or river water must never be used. The filling container should be a clean ceramic or glass vessel, and filling should be done before the car is started or while the engine is idling, to ensure that the distilled water added mixes thoroughly with the original electrolyte. 2. How to determine whether a battery needs to be charged? Use a voltmeter to check the voltage of each cell in the battery; if the voltage is less than 1.27V, it should be charged. Otherwise, it will cause the plates to oxidize and get damaged. 3. How to properly disassemble and assemble a battery? When removing or installing the battery, first disconnect the ground wire. When removing the chuck, use an appropriate wrench to loosen the chuck bolts, and remove it gently or with special tools to avoid damage from impact. After removing the chuck, it is necessary to clean the chuck thoroughly. When reassembling, make sure to distinguish the positions of the positive and negative electrode terminals and pay attention to a tight fit. When installing the battery in the battery compartment, use a clamp to press it firmly, so as to prevent it from being damaged by vibrations during driving. II. How to choose and use batteries correctly? 1. When purchasing a battery, first identify the letters on it; those with the QA letters indicate a sealed battery. 2. When adding the electrolyte, shake it well first before pouring it into the battery, and be careful not to let the electrolyte splash on your hands or clothes. 3. For batteries without marking lines, the electrolyte should be added to a level 10 to 15 millimeters above the plates ; For batteries with two red lines, the electrolyte level must not exceed the upper red line. 4. When adding liquid, be careful not to let any other substances fall into the battery. If such substances do get inside, never use metal objects to remove them; instead, use a dry wooden stick to pick out the impurities. Using wire or copper wire to fish out the debris will cause metal particles to come into contact with the acid inside the battery, leading to self-discharge and damage to the battery. 5. While driving as usual, it is necessary to regularly check whether the holes on the battery cover are properly ventilated. If these holes become blocked, hydrogen and oxygen generated cannot escape; when the electrolyte expands, it can cause the battery casing to burst, thereby reducing the battery’s lifespan. 6. The level of the electrolyte should be checked regularly, and electrolyte should be added as needed. When adding fluid to the battery in winter, it is best to do so after the car has started and the engine is running, to prevent the electrolyte from freezing. 7. For cars that are not used for a long time, the engine should be started every 25 days or so, and the throttle should be used to maintain a moderate speed for about 20 minutes; otherwise, if left unused for too long, the car may fail to start when it is needed. 8. When removing the battery from the car, the negative terminal should be removed first, followed by the positive terminal; the reverse order is used when installing it. When charging, be sure to unscrew the battery cover. Do not approach the battery terminals while it is charging with hands that are near an open flame, as the hydrogen gas generated inside the battery during charging can easily catch fire and damage the battery; moreover, the electrolyte can also cause injury. 9. Do not replace the car’s battery with one that has a higher capacity than the original one, as the generator in the car produces a fixed amount of electricity – this amount does not increase. If a battery with a higher capacity is used, the new battery will not be charged properly, preventing the car from starting smoothly. Additionally, a battery that remains undercharged for extended periods will deteriorate more quickly. 10. When starting the car, each attempt at startup should take no more than 3 to 5 seconds, with an interval of at least 15 seconds between attempts. If the car still won’t start after several attempts, check the startup circuit, such as the starter motor’s pull coil and the ignition circuit, as well as other related components for possible issues.
