In the fertilizer industry, the desulfurization pressure for semi-water gas is at atmospheric pressure, around 300–400 mmHg; whereas for shift gas desulfurization, it is generally between 0.8 and 4.0 MPa. The resistance loss depends on factors such as the packing specifications, packing height, and gas-liquid ratio. Generally, in the early stages of operation, the pressure loss in a packed tower is not very high; the longer it operates, the more severe the blockage becomes, and thus the greater the pressure loss.

In the ammonia synthesis process, packed towers are commonly used for desulfurization of semi-water gas and gas after shift reaction.
