What are the common forms of plate-type support structures?

Steel sheet piles come in flat and wavy types (Figure 1-20). The steel sheet piles are connected to each other through interlock joints, forming a continuous retaining wall. Due to the locking joints, the steel sheet piles are firmly connected to form a single unit, while also possessing good water resistance. Steel sheet piles have a small cross-sectional area, making them easy to drive in. Wavy steel sheet pile sections such as U-shaped and Z-shaped ones have good bending resistance. The support systems generally consist of large steel pipes, H-shaped steel, or lattice steel supports; cast-in-place reinforced concrete supports can also be used. The materials for anchor systems are generally rebar, steel cables, shaped steel, or soil anchors. One or more supports can be installed depending on the depth of excavation and the sectional properties of the retaining wall system. When the foundation pit is shallow and the retaining wall has sufficient stiffness, a cantilever retaining wall can be used without the need for supports. The support or anchorage systems and the retaining wall system are connected into a single unit through ring beams, cap beams, etc.
