Coal refining? Is it coal-to-oil? If it’s about coal-to-oil conversion, then projects of this kind are not allowed to be carried out at the moment. But we all know that it holds great promise in the future. As for how many years it will take, that’s hard to say – it could be three to five years, or maybe a dozen years or so. But coal-to-oil conversion is a solution that could help address the shortage of oil-based fuels in the future.
What process? What scale? How much to invest? Approve?
Coal-to-oil production has been banned, but there is good news now: the 160,000-ton per year indirect liquefaction plant operated by Yitai in Inner Mongolia has begun producing oil, and the quality of this oil meets all standards. Large-scale production is set to begin soon. There were a few other plants that produced oil in the past, but their operations were short-lived. The fact that Yitai has started production is undoubtedly very important for the coal-to-oil industry; it also provides us with technical insights regarding coal indirect liquefaction. I believe the future of coal-to-oil production looks very promising.

Don’t be afraid of state-owned enterprises! Coal-to-oil production in the short term will not disappear, but I don’t think it will develop very rapidly either! Who would want to do it anymore!
For coal-to-oil plants that are already in operation or have been put into production at this stage, the most important tasks and actions required are to ensure stable operation, carry out optimization and upgrades, and reduce costs; As an energy source, coal-to-oil has a bright future!
The prospects for coal-to-oil conversion are promising, but so far there is no fully successful method in China, including indirect liquefaction. Claims of success are nothing but exaggerations. I believe that from a strategic perspective, considering the changes in the international situation, coal-to-oil conversion represents a way to achieve self-sufficiency, so as to avoid shortages of oil in case the crude oil supply is disrupted; otherwise, there would be no reason to invest so much money in something that is not guaranteed to succeed. In my opinion, coal-to-oil is an energy-intensive industry. South Africa won’t share its technology with us, and China’s own technology is still only at the laboratory stage. When it comes to putting such technologies into use, the people at the coal chemistry research institute use industrial-scale equipment for their experiments – it’s really heartbreaking! Think about it: those who transfer technology are still in the process of exploration, so how can industrial production be profitable? It’s entirely those ** funds that are used to fund their experiments. Of course, as a strategic reserve project, it does have its rationale for existence; during large-scale wars or when other countries impose resource embargoes on our country, coal-to-oil conversion can then play its true role! Therefore, I believe that coal-to-oil conversion should remain at the stage of small-scale industrial experiments, rather than large-scale commercial production. The indirect oil production process requires an initial investment of over 10 billion. It has not been fully approved yet.

Shenhua Ordos coal-to-oil technology has been commercialized. Profit is 800 yuan per ton; currently, the production volume is 1.5 million tons per year. Everything is negotiable, but coal-to-oil production consumes a large amount of water resources. Inner Mongolia being a city in the western region suffers from a shortage of water, and the success of its development depends on how well this water issue can be addressed. I hope that the water resources here will not be overused, otherwise the lives of the local people will become very difficult.
