A friend is working on a model of an earth-rock dam, and he’s not sure what values to use for the elastic modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the dam material and the clay core wall. If anyone knows, please help answer it Thank you
Is your friend going to create a finite element analysis model for an earth-rock dam? According to Article 8.4.5 of the “Design Code for Roller-Compacted Earth and Rock Dams” SL274-2001, the analysis of stress and strain should be carried out using nonlinear elastic stress-strain relationships; elastic-plastic stress-strain relationships can also be employed. For dams and foundation layers made of cohesive soil, it is necessary to take into account the influence of consolidation on the stress and deformation of the dam structure. Article 8.4.6 states that the parameters used in finite element calculations should be determined through experiments, with consideration given to engineering analogies as well. The mechanical properties of the materials used in testing should be representative of those of the actual materials employed in dam construction. The testing conditions and loading methods should reflect the construction and operational conditions of the dam. According to clause 8.4.7, finite element calculations should simulate the staged loading of the dam during its construction and filling processes, and should also take into account the mechanical properties of any discontinuous interfaces within the dam. A Poisson’s ratio of around 0.3 can generally be used; this value is also close to that of actual soil, with little variation. Moreover, Poisson’s ratio has a relatively minor impact on stress and strain, which is sufficient to meet the requirements for engineering accuracy. Should only the elastic modulus be considered? The linear elastic model is generally not used these days; the most commonly employed model is the Duncan-Chang nonlinear model (refer to the textbook \"Elastoplastic Mechanics\”), and the parameters required for it go far beyond just the elastic modulus. If it’s not for actual engineering work, the parameters can be estimated based on the classification of geotechnical materials ; For actual engineering work, please refer to the explanatory provisions in clauses 8.4.5 to 8.4.7 of the specifications, and make decisions based on geotechnical tests.
