MTBE is highly controversial for environmental reasons; diisopropyl ether has physical and chemical properties similar to those of MTBE, and its raw materials are readily available, making it the most suitable substitute for MTBE. Has anyone used diisopropyl ether? How is it working?

Most acrylic derivatives are much more valuable than diisopropyl ether. The main use of MTBE is as a component in gasoline blending, and its added value is not high; whereas polypropylene, acrylonitrile, propylene oxide, chloropropylene oxide, isopropanol, and other products derived from acrylic acid are definitely far more valuable than gasoline. The environmental concerns related to MTBE were first raised by several states in the United States; at least half of the U.S. states allow the use of MTBE. I believe that these environmental concerns were raised for some commercial purposes. MTBE breaks down more easily and faster in nature compared to benzene. As for water pollution, unless it’s an accident, would gas stations and car owners pour out gasoline containing MTBE from their tanks? The United States has the highest grain production in the world, especially for corn; as a result, it also leads in the production of corn ethanol. The ban on MTBE was implemented mainly to make way for corn ethanol, since in at least half of the U.S. states, gasoline contains ethanol.
