What is the method for heating an oil-burning furnace built with refractory castables? According to the manual, the heating rate is 15 degrees per hour, with a total time of around 140 hours. I would like to ask if it’s possible to use fuel oil to heat the furnace directly? Should I use another method to heat the furnace? How is this heating rate, heating time, and furnace temperature uniformity controlled?
Generally, diesel furnaces are used; it is better to employ specialized baking ovens, as this can reduce temperature differences in various areas. It is not easy to operate a kiln by directly using heavy oil or other fuels.
1. The manual should contain a detailed plan for heating the furnace. 2. It should be divided into several stages; for example: a. 0–240 degrees Celsius (using wood for heating, duration: 16 hours); b. Maintaining 240 degrees Celsius (duration: 8 hours), and so on. 3. Either diesel or heavy oil can be used; we will start using heavy oil along with waste materials from the second stage onward
You can use fuel directly; in fact, it’s not necessary to follow the furnace heating curve strictly – some deviations are acceptable, as someone from the refractory material manufacturer told me.

There is a specific procedure for heating the furnace; it depends on the rate of temperature increase, the duration for maintaining that temperature, the type of casting material used, the construction techniques, as well as the operating temperature of the furnace. It is recommended to strictly follow the furnace drying standards provided by the refractory manufacturer.
