Nalco Mobotec, a global leader in combustion optimization and air improvement technologies, recently announced a joint venture agreement with SONIC Technology Solutions in Vancouver, Canada, to develop technologies that utilize coal plant fly ash as a substitute for cement. The joint venture is named SonoAsh, and it will be dedicated to developing and improving SONIC Company’s SonoAsh technology. This technology performs physical pretreatment on waste fly ash to reduce residual carbon. Once developed successfully, a complete commercial process for converting waste coal ash into a cement substitute or concrete additive can be put into use. Cement production is one of the largest commodity industries in the world, as well as one of the most energy-intensive sectors. High-grade fly ash from the power industry is now being used in the concrete industry as an additive to improve the efficiency of cement, and even as a substitute for cement. Such recycling can **reduce the need for cement production, thereby significantly cutting global greenhouse gas emissions. The SonoAsh technology can convert low-grade fly ash into high-grade fly ash, benefiting both the power and cement industries. “7% of global carbon dioxide emissions come from cement production, and North America and Europe have begun to use high-grade fly ash on a selective basis. However, in North America, 65% of fly ash is still considered unsuitable for the cement industry and is discarded. The global annual demand for cement is approaching 3 billion tons, and demand for cement has been growing particularly rapidly in recent years.
