The graduation project topic assigned to me by my teacher was: to design a lubricating oil storage tank with a capacity of 500 M³. There is only one requirement: it must be able to hold all the lubricants. I would like to ask whether to use a vertical or horizontal design, spherical or cylindrical shape, and a fixed roof or a floating roof? I’ve read some books; initially I chose vertical cylindrical vault storage tanks, but after asking others, they said several types would work as well. Now I’m confused and don’t know how to make a choice. Please give me some guidance – thank you very much! There’s another question I’m not sure if I should ask here. I need a tank that can hold all types of lubricants; I’ve read some books on the subject, but there are so many different kinds of lubricants, and I’m not sure which one should be used for the design. Not all lubricants have the worst conditions; it’s not possible to design based on the properties of a single type of oil. So what should be done? :'( **Please give me more guidance.

A vertical arch roof is preferred; horizontal tanks usually do not exceed 150 cubic meters in volume
For such a small storage tank, a vertical fixed-roof arch-shaped tank will suffice. Lubricants have a low ignition point, so there is no need to use a floating roof; when a floating roof is used, the material of the sealing rings must also be taken into consideration. It is difficult to choose an appropriate material for such applications when dealing with all types of lubricants. If there is a concern that exposure to air could cause an explosion, a nitrogen seal can be included in the design.
