The seaweed biofuel demonstration project will be completed

Recently, a pilot plant that uses seaweed to convert carbon dioxide into biofuels and other products began construction in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. South Africa will also gradually introduce this green technology across the country, and expand it to other parts of Africa as well. By June this year, a photobioreactor with an area of 200 square meters will be built. This reactor is capable of producing 2 tons of seaweed biomass per year, which can then be converted into biofuels, glycerin, and proteins. By 2010, two photobioreactors with an area of 1,000 square meters each will be built to evaluate the application of this technology in industrial processes. The goal of this project is to create a new model for reducing carbon dioxide emissions, namely the large-scale and permanent capture of carbon dioxide using low-cost, sustainable technologies.
