As is well known, in coal indirect liquefaction plants, the coal consumed includes: 1) coal used to produce syngas (raw coal); 2) energy for operation; 3) hydrogen used in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process (hydrogen produced from coal, using raw coal as a source); 4) other materials. Based on 1 ton of oil produced, 4–4.5 tons of dry, ash-free refined coal are required for both raw coal and fuel coal. Using 4.5 tons as an estimate, and taking into account moisture and ash content, approximately 5.6 tons of raw coal are needed to produce 1 ton of oil product. . Note $ # , $ $
You’re absolutely right; the tonnage of coal consumed per unit of oil actually doesn’t mean much. Many processes employ different methods, such as gasification processes, energy utilization techniques, and processes for post-treatment of the products. I think it’s more appropriate to assess economic viability by comparing the costs of the products. For example, if both are producing No. 0 diesel, using representative feedstocks and comparing the production costs with those of coal-based diesel gives a more meaningful comparison
