The world’s methanol producers mainly manufacture commercial methanol, using very little for their own needs. To facilitate the sale of methanol to markets around the world, large methanol producers own their own ocean-going shipping fleets and storage and transportation facilities. In our province, in addition to being converted on-site, some methanol is also in the form of commercial product, which needs to be transported over long distances to methanol-consuming areas such as East China and South China. Due to its corrosive properties and tendency to catch fire or explode, methanol requires the use of specialized tank trucks, which gives rise to issues related to the transportation and storage of methanol products. The first is the transportation issue of methanol products. China’s railway capacity is strained, and this situation is not expected to improve significantly in the foreseeable future. Freight rates are also on the rise; as of April 10, 2006, average railway freight rates increased by 0.44 fen per ton-kilometer, representing a rise of 5%. The return trips of dedicated tank cars also result in wasted capacity, exacerbating the strain on railway transportation. This tension results in a lack of stability and flexibility in the supply of methanol from the interior areas to coastal regions, preventing timely adjustments in response to customer demands. Transportation costs account for 15% to 30% of methanol prices, contributing to the actual increase in methanol prices. Second, methanol companies should establish a long-term storage and transportation system. Methanol companies need to build, or jointly establish, national and even global methanol transshipment hubs based on their existing in-house storage, transportation, and railway shipping facilities. They should develop large-scale methanol transshipment hubs and storage facilities, and acquire or rent on a long-term basis large specialized transport vehicles and fleets for methanol delivery. Third are storage and transportation facilities and management issues. Methanol is a flammable and explosive substance with certain toxicity and corrosivity; it requires high standards in terms of storage, transportation facilities, as well as management during these processes. Special storage and transportation facilities along with professional management are necessary.
