These days, we all pay close attention to the disposal of household waste and hazardous chemicals, but we overlook the classification of industrial waste. Industrial waste covers a wide range of materials; when classified, many of them pose threats to humans, water resources, the atmosphere, and soil – such as waste from pharmaceutical factories, calcium carbide plants, and the petrochemical industry. Often, this type of waste is not treated properly and is disposed of along with household waste, which does not receive enough attention. Relevant authorities should pay attention to this issue, but first and foremost, it is up to us to do so.
(1) By source, it is generally divided into municipal solid waste, industrial solid waste, and agricultural waste. Municipal Solid Waste: This refers primarily to the solid waste generated in urban daily life or as a result of activities that serve urban daily life, that is, urban household waste. It mainly includes household waste, hospital waste, commercial waste, and construction waste – also known as debris. The waste in the country mainly consists of kitchen waste, with the rest being glass, plastic, waste paper, etc. Industrial Solid Waste: Refers to solid wastes generated in industrial and transportation-related production activities, such as mining waste rock, ore processing tailings, fuel slag, and waste residues from chemical manufacturing and smelting; it is also known as industrial slag or industrial waste. Industrial solid waste can be broadly divided into six categories based on its source and physical properties. Based on the toxicity of the waste residues, they can be divided into two main categories: toxic and non-toxic waste residues. Waste that contains fluorine, mercury, arsenic, chromium, cadmium, lead, cyanide and their compounds, as well as phenols and radioactive substances, is considered toxic waste. Agricultural Waste, also known as farm waste, mainly consists of manure and plant residues. (II) Based on their physical form, wastes can be classified into solid, semi-solid, and slurry forms. (III) Based on chemical properties, they can be divided into organic waste and inorganic waste. The current principles for solid waste management are mainly reduction, resource utilization, and harmlessness. Reduction means trying to minimize the generation of waste; resource utilization involves actively promoting the comprehensive use of waste resources; and harm reduction entails ensuring that the collection and disposal of waste take environmental protection into account, in order to avoid damaging the environment and affecting health. The effectiveness of resource utilization is closely related to proper sorting; for example, in the case of household waste, if sorting is not done properly, it becomes difficult to achieve cost-effective resource utilization. As for the classification of solid waste, the solid waste generated by industrial enterprises is generally simple to classify and easy to manage. The challenge lies in household waste, as it involves issues such as households, the quality of the population, and living habits; as a result, household waste is mostly disposed of through landfilling and incineration, leading to significant waste of resources.
Classification of solid waste: It can be divided into organic and inorganic materials based on its composition. By form, it can be categorized as solid or slurry-like. Depending on its level of hazard, it can be classified as ordinary waste or hazardous waste. In most cases, it is classified according to its source. (1) Industrial solid waste: 1. Metallurgical solid waste; 2. Fuel ash and slag; 3. Solid waste from the chemical industry; 4. Solid waste from the petroleum industry; 5. Solid waste from the food processing industry. (2) Mining solid waste. (3) Urban solid waste: 1. Household waste; 2. Construction debris; 3. Commercial solid waste; 4. Feces. (4) Agricultural solid waste. (5) Radioactive solid waste. Proper classification of solid waste is only the first step in waste management; what is truly needed are economical and effective waste treatment technologies.
There are many methods for classifying solid waste; what the original poster mentioned is just one of them. Other classification methods are discussed in various posts, so I won’t go into further detail. The key lies in processing and disposal. Regardless of the category, hazardous waste (such as medical waste and waste containing toxic or harmful substances) is treated separately. Most industrial waste is reused, and the same is true for construction waste. As for electronic waste, there is currently no effective method for its disposal in our country. The technologies for dealing with municipal solid waste are quite advanced, ranging from sanitary landfilling and composting to incineration. It’s written in a rather messy way; just make do with it
The main principles for solid waste management in our country at present are reduction, resource utilization, and harmlessness. It can be said that the underlying idea is correct, but it is very difficult to achieve with the current level of technology and people’s mindset. On the other hand, individuals need to try to minimize the generation of household waste in their daily lives. Resource utilization requires companies to recover useful materials from industrial waste, and this has only been achieved to some extent; for example, the recovery of certain heavy metals and the use of coal gangue and fly ash, but most of this waste is still discarded as trash. Making waste harmless is, arguably, the most difficult task. The current mainstream methods of landfilling and incineration fail to truly eliminate the harmful substances in waste; they merely shift where these substances end up or slow down their impact.
