On December 22, 2008, the 160,000 t/a coal-based synthetic oil demonstration project of Lu’an Group successfully produced oil; this was China’s first demonstration facility for coal indirect liquefaction to produce synthetic oil. The Lu’an coal-to-oil demonstration project was selected through a **-level project bidding process. It is located within the Tunliu coal-oil circular economy park of the Lu’an Group; construction began in February 2006, and the gasifier was successfully ignited on September 15, 2008. This project is a pivotal demonstration project for Shanxi Province and China’s coal industry. The successful production of oil from it signifies significant progress in the Lu’an coal-based synthetic oil project. It holds great importance for Lu’an Group in terms of adjusting its industrial structure and advancing the development of circular economy parks, as well as for China’s research and development in alternative energy sources and the industrialization of indirect coal liquefaction. The project development plan is as follows: once the project is successful, the construction of the first industrial plant with a capacity of 3 million tons per year will be completed between 2009 and 2012, with each production unit having a capacity of 400,000 tons per year to 600,000 tons per year ； From 2012 to 2015, the construction of a second industrial plant with an annual production capacity of 3 million tons was completed, ultimately turning Lu’an Group into a competitive and influential demonstration base and production site for coal-based synthetic oils in China. . The oil output comes from an industrial side line of a 160,000-ton synthetic oil plant; it uses a fixed-bed cobalt-based catalyst and operates on a scale of several hundred tons per day – it is therefore a pilot-scale facility. This plant makes use of technologies such as pressurized coal gasification and gas purification to produce high-quality coal-based syngas. Its designed production capacity is 150 barrels per day. It began operating on December 16, 2008, and has been in continuous operation to this day.
