The problem of optimal control in DCS?

I have read a lot of materials; modern control theory mentions optimal control methods such as predictive control and robust control. Do any of you experts have experience in this area? Could you explain how to program in DCS? For example, in the furnace temperature control loop, how are these algorithms applied?
