For small air separation units, screw compressors (usually Wuyou screw compressors) and centrifuges are commonly used as driving mechanisms; the drive comes from electric motors. For large air separation units, only centrifuges can be used as driving mechanisms, with steam turbines being the preferred choice when a steam source is available
