For steel vertical vessels, especially various types of gas storage tanks with a volume of 50–100 cubic meters, a nominal diameter of 2–4 meters, and a height of 7–15 meters, supported frames or skirt foundations are used as support systems. How do you usually decide on this? Regarding the volume range, it should be noted that for volumes over 100 cubic meters, spherical tanks can be considered; if space is a constraint, vertical storage tanks can also be an option, but for volumes of 200 cubic meters or more, spherical tanks are definitely the preferred choice. Regarding the tank height and height-to-diameter ratio, what is meant here is that if the height is greater than 10 m but the height-to-diameter ratio is less than 5, it falls outside the scope of JB/T 4710; in such cases, design in accordance with GB 150 is sufficient. For such storage tanks, wind loads and seismic loads have little impact. Supporting bearings can be used, and design shall be carried out in accordance with JB/T 4712.4; the bearings need to be checked. When a skirt is used, the relevant design requirements in JB/T 4710 can be referred to for verification; the calculations are complex, but the stress conditions on the skirt are favorable.
For vertical storage tanks with large volumes, we generally use a skirt support system as well. The skirt is usually designed in accordance with the technical specifications for tower structures; this design ensures good stress distribution and stability for the skirt.
