When determining the \"acid value\" or \"ester value\" of certain ester compounds, the methods recommended by national standards usually require a saponification process that lasts 1 hour, which seems like a long time. Regarding saponification, is there any simpler way to handle it? Provided that it does not affect the test results. Everyone can talk about it.
To determine the acid value, it is sufficient to dissolve a certain amount of the sample in an appropriate neutral solvent and then titrate it with an alkaline standard solution; saponification is not required. The process is quick. As for the saponification value, it is generally determined by carrying out saponification under water bath conditions for 1 hour; for substances that are difficult to saponify, the time may be longer. So far, I have not come across any faster methods – if anyone knows such methods, they might share them. There are reports indicating that near-infrared manufacturers can use near-infrared spectrometers to rapidly analyze parameters such as the acid value and saponification value of oils; this process is fast, representing a combination of spectral analysis and chemometrics. Modeling requires chemical analysis results from a large number of samples, and ongoing collection of additional data is needed to improve the accuracy of the results. The accuracy of these results depends on the precision of the chemical analysis results as well as factors such as the sample’s condition and origin. The saponifies from oil chemical plants can indeed be detected by chromatography, but due to the limitations of chromatographic analysis, chemical analysis remains the primary method.
