I currently have a project involving the separation of tert-butanol from water. After checking, I found that these two substances are azeotropic and miscible with each other; therefore, I plan to use an azeotrope-forming agent to carry out triple-azeotropic distillation, with phase separation taking place at the top of the tower. However, I don’t have any data on the solubility of tert-butanol in water. If anyone has this information, I would be extremely grateful if you could share it with me. It’s urgent – I’m waiting online!
The azeotrope temperature is 79.97°C. The compositions at the azeotrope are as follows: MOLE BASIS / MASS BASIS – H2O: 0.3791 / 0.1292; C4H10-01: 0.6209 / 0.8708. I’m not sure how large the difference is compared to the azeotropy data provided by the original poster
Two columns are required for separation: 1. Dehydration column: Cyclohexane is added for azeotropic dehydration; the vapor stream is separated into water and oil phases, with the oil phase being returned. 2. Dehydration tower: The product from the bottom of the dehydration tower is further dehydrated to yield tert-butanol. I carried out this production ten years ago; the specific details and dates are too old to remember, so I’ll go back and check. If I find them, I’ll let you know.
