In large air separation units, are the process pumps and backup pumps multi-stage pumps or truck pumps, which are single-stage pumps? What is the difference between multi-stage pumps and single-stage pumps? And what is the difference in their inlet and outlet arrangements (top inlet and bottom outlet, or top outlet and bottom inlet)?
Whether to use a single-stage pump or a multi-stage pump depends mainly on the outlet pressure.
Additionally, a single-stage centrifugal pump should have fluid flow in the axial direction and out in the radial direction, and it is independent of whether it is installed vertically or horizontally； In single-stage and multi-stage pumps, the outlet is usually located at the top. (For reference)
