Pinacol coke is an important new type of carbon industry material, which can be used to manufacture ultra-high power graphite electrodes and high power graphite electrodes. Compared with ordinary graphite electrodes, ultra-high power electrodes can reduce the steelmaking time in electric furnaces by 50–70%, and lower power consumption by 20–50%. Depending on the raw material, needle coke can be divided into petroleum-based and coal-based types. The former uses petroleum components as raw materials, while the latter uses coal tar components as raw materials. Petroleum-based needle coke was successfully developed and put into industrial production by Continental Oil Company in the 1960s, and today this method holds a dominant position worldwide. Coal-based needle coke was successfully developed and industrialized in the early 1980s by two Japanese companies (Nippon Steel Chemical and Mitsubishi Kasei). There are many methods for producing coal-based needle coke, but only Japan has achieved industrial production, using the solvent method. In China, research on the production of coal-based acicular coke has also been ongoing for many years, yet no breakthroughs have been achieved to date. A summary of it is shown in Table 2. The production methods listed in Table 1 refer to the methods for raw material pretreatment (which is a key process). The key to coal-based needle coke technology is: *1 to remove quinoline-insoluble substances (QI) from the raw material. The lower the QI value, the higher the quality of needle coke. *2 It is necessary to select coking and calcination processes that are conducive to the formation of needle coke, along with the production conditions and process operation parameters. At present, the technology for needle coke in our country is advancing rapidly, and the production facilities for coal-based needle coke in Shanxi Hongte and Anshan, Liaoning are operating stably. The projects in Pingdingshan, Henan, and Xiaoyi, Shanxi, are under construction. Oil-based needle coke has been produced on a trial basis in Jinzhou, Liaoning for many years; currently, a factory in Shandong is constructing an facility for producing oil-based needle coke.
