Methane chlorides are used not only as solvents, degreasing agents (for paints), extractants, aerosols, refrigerants, fire extinguishants, and **agents, but also as raw materials for the production of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, silicone, and organofluorine-based products. Since industrial production began in the 1930s, it has become an important organic chlorine-consuming product for post-processing in the chlor-alkali industry. In the world, chloromethane is primarily used in the production of methylchlorosilane monomers for the silicone industry, accounting for about 90% of global chloromethane consumption. A portion of chloromethane is also used in the production of products such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, methyl cellulose, and quaternary ammonium compounds. With the rapid development of the domestic economy, demand for silicone in China has increased sharply; it is estimated that the demand for chloromethane will reach around 260,000 tons by 2010.
