The high cost is due entirely to the chemicals required; it is recommended to use biological phosphorus removal in the initial stages, and then apply chemicals for removal. For removal using chemicals, it is generally better to add some chemicals before the biochemical treatment, and to add more of them before precipitation occurs after the biochemical treatment. Polyferric sulfate tends to be more effective as a coagulant, while PAC may be slightly less effective.
