Cleaning of the synthesis furnace sight glass

Since the viewports of the HCl synthesis furnace could no longer be seen clearly, one of our synthesis furnaces stopped operating yesterday; we removed the viewports to clean them, using NaOH solution for cleaning – of course, at a very low concentration! You must have encountered the need to clean viewports; I’m wondering what your company uses for cleaning them and what the results are like. This type of iron is difficult to clean, especially over time. So it’s better to replace it; the price isn’t too high
View mirrors are cheap, so it’s better to replace them.

Hehe! Everyone says to buy new ones, and that is indeed the most straightforward approach. However, when cleaning the viewports, it is usually necessary to shut down the furnace as well; in many cases, cleaning is sufficient. I wonder whether everyone buys new ones or simply cleans them like we do and continues to use them, after all, they can still be used for viewing after being cleaned! We usually wipe it with a damp cloth; for more severe cases, wiping it with hydrochloric acid works very well!
First, scrub it; if scaling occurs in an hydrochloric acid environment, it’s likely that hydrochloric acid won’t be able to remove it, so try oxalic acid
When producing acid, you can set the synthesis furnace to have an excess of chlorine; after burning for a while, the viewing glass will be clean

During normal production, there is an excess of hydrogen, and operating in this way will cause problems; as a production manager, I do not recommend such practices. If you do this, the operators won’t know what other issues might arise, haha.
The viewfinder in our unit became blurry again not long after it was cleaned; it’s indeed a problem, and we have no choice but to replace it with a new one.
