Can syngas exit from the syngas outlet of the gasifier directly along the wall of the quench chamber, without passing through an upcomer? Is there a gap or is it sealed between the riser and the syngas outlet?
It’s completely possible without using an ascension tube; many manufacturers have now eliminated the ascension tube

It is possible to do without an elevation tube; the function of such a tube is to keep the liquid level in the quench chamber stable and prevent large fluctuations. Some manufacturers have now removed the elevation tubes and replaced them with bubble-breaking strips, which help maintain a low liquid level, thus stabilizing it and reducing the amount of water carried in the syngas. It is not necessary to use a rising pipe, but other components such as bubble breakers must be added; otherwise, excessive fluctuations in the liquid level inside the quench chamber will lead to inaccurate readings from the level gauge, causing operational errors. The upper part of the riser is not sealed to the syngas outlet.
