What are the causes of localized damage to the impeller surface of a centrifugal pump?

Recently, the impeller surface of one of the tubular circulating water centrifugal pumps in our facility had to be replaced due to damage and scars on it. Previously, the pump would occasionally make unusual noises. I know cavitation is one of the contributing factors; I was wondering if there are any other more significant causes
