In coke oven production, the cross braces located at the base of the rising tubes, around the coal feeding ports, or near the flue holes can become extremely hot due to leakage. The normal temperature for such braces is around 350–450 degrees, but when leakage occurs, the temperature rises significantly. When exposed to high temperatures for an extended period, the diameter of these braces oxidizes and decreases; once the diameter drops below 75% of its original value, the brace loses its strength and must be replaced or reinforced. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly monitor their diameter (this can be done by checking the changes in the tension of the springs on the upper part of the braces). However, currently, most of these braces are situated in grooves on the top of the furnace, with insulating material filled inside them and cover bricks placed on top, which makes it difficult to measure their diameter. What tools do you use to measure their diameter? The convenient and quick method – it’s not easy to measure using a vernier caliper, because the pull strip is located in a groove; that groove is quite deep and narrow, so the vernier caliper cannot fit inside it. Our factory uses a relatively traditional approach: we lift off the bricks covering the strips at the points that need to be measured, blow them clean with compressed air, take measurements using calipers, and then put everything back in place. It’s important that heat treatment and the use of metal components go hand in hand… I wonder if anyone has better methods?
This must be a rather rough measurement; we use a vernier caliper for the measurements
