May I ask, which has a higher column resistance, a capillary column or a packed column? Why?
In packed columns, the smaller the particle size of the stationary phase, the greater the column resistance. For capillary columns, which are generally hollow, the column resistance is related to the column length and inner diameter; in my opinion, it is difficult to make comparisons in this case.
I think it’s because of the high column resistance of the capillary column, due to its small inner diameter and long length.

The resistance of capillary chromatography columns is low, while that of the packing is high. Like distillation columns, packed columns have high resistance. Additionally, since the fixing liquid is applied directly to the tube wall, the inner surface area of the entire column is large and the coating layer is thin, which **reduces the mass transfer resistance in both the gas and liquid phases, thereby improving the column efficiency.
It’s not easy to compare; how can things that aren’t of the same kind be compared! The length and inner diameter of the two are different; moreover, for the packing column, it depends on the size of your particles, so they cannot be compared!
