What kind of welding style is seam welding? The diagrams in mechanical design manuals don’t make it clear. If it’s seam welding, then why can the weld be seen on the outer surfaces of the two steel plates where they don’t touch? Hope experts can provide answers

Do you mean “seam welding”? Seam welding is a welding method that uses a pair of roller electrodes to replace the cylindrical electrodes used in spot welding; these rollers move relative to the workpiece, thereby creating sealed welds in which the molten nuclei overlap one another. A resistance welding method in which the welded parts are assembled into lap or butt joints and placed between two roller electrodes; the rollers apply pressure to the parts while rotating, and electric current is supplied continuously or intermittently to form a continuous weld seam. Seam welding is widely used for welding thin sheets of containers in oil drums, canned goods containers, radiators, aircraft and automobile fuel tanks, as well as in jet engines, rockets, and missiles.
