Our company uses the partial oxidation of natural gas to produce acetylene. The acetylene produced contains trace impurities such as methylacetylene, methylene, 1,3-butadiene, and sulfides (hydrogen sulfide and organic sulfides). In the acetylene purification process, graded acid washing with 87% and 94% concentrated sulfuric acid is employed for purification. Could any expert please explain the reaction principle behind the use of sulfuric acid to remove these trace impurities? I would like to express my gratitude here.

As mentioned in the post, I guess it might be the production section for acetylene downstream products. To remove higher alkynes from acetylene, most processes employ oxidation with concentrated sulfuric acid, while sulfides in acetylene are removed using caustic soda. Advanced alkynes are generally oxidized to carbon dioxide, while some organic sulfur compounds are oxidized to hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide. Carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide produced through oxidation react with caustic soda to form sodium carbonate, sodium sulfide, sodium sulfate, sodium sulfite, as well as some sodium thiosulfate and similar compounds. Through these two steps, the purification of acetylene is essentially achieved.

In the partial oxidation of natural gas to produce acetylene, concentrated sulfuric acid is generally used for oxidation and removal of impurities; this method is employed by companies such as Sichuan Wei Group. The calcium carbide method used by Taihua also relies on this approach. Other domestic manufacturers of acetylene from calcium carbide use sodium hypochlorite at a concentration of 0.08–0.12% for purification. Both purification methods have their advantages and disadvantages: acetylene produced by the partial oxidation of natural gas contains slightly higher levels of higher alkynes, so the use of concentrated sulfuric acid is more effective; however, it presents the challenge of dealing with dilute sulfuric acid. Acetylene produced by the calcium carbide method contains slightly higher levels of inorganic acidic gases and lower levels of higher alkynes, making sodium hypochlorite a better choice for purification :handshake
