I currently work at a petrochemical company in my home country. I really want to change jobs and move away from such polluting manufacturing enterprises. I majored in process engineering in college, and I aim to transition into the field of petrochemical process design. How can I make the most of my current experience working at a petrochemical company? And in what aspects should one prepare oneself? I’m currently learning *process simulation software, mainly Aspen Plus; I’m also studying HYSYS, PROII, and things like that. Is there anything else I need to learn? My goal is to be able to start working immediately upon arriving at a design firm or engineering company, without having to undergo training from scratch. . . Process simulation accounts for only a small portion of the workload in engineering design. So even if you become an expert in simulation, you won’t be able to dominate in design institutes. Moreover, if one is not working on FEED, being good at process simulation does not offer much advantage. The site is a great place to learn about various devices. It is recommended to find all the design documents related to the device you are working with and study them thoroughly and systematically. As for engineering companies, I joined after graduating from school without receiving any systematic training. I just read some materials on my own, and when I encounter specific problems, I ask colleagues who know about them. Generally, only by asking for advice humbly from colleagues who know more, especially some experienced workers, will they be willing to teach.
Suggestions: 1. Use this time to learn as much as possible about the basic data and parameters on site. 2. Design institutes rarely use simulations; essentially, the work there involves design. 3. When working in a design institute, it’s necessary to first master CAD. 4. Reputable design institutes place great emphasis on theoretical calculations, so it’s important to learn more about these calculations – it’s a fundamental requirement. 5. With experience from the field, design work becomes much easier; it’s a matter of accumulation. Just study the standards and regulations thoroughly. After all, design is different from development, as design involves things that are already quite mature.

Thanks for the suggestion from the guy above. I learned Auto CAD while in university; I used it to create drawings for my graduation project. I haven’t used it much since graduating, but if I practice a few more times, I should be able to use it more proficiently. There is currently an electronic version of the Chemical Process Design Manual compiled by Sinopec Shanghai Engineering Co., Ltd. and published by the Chemical Industry Press; I was wondering if this version will work? I’d like to ask quietly: what is the after-tax salary of process engineering designers in design institutes or engineering companies? Take Beijing as an example. . .
Without on-site experience, working in a design institute is like working in isolation; having only on-site experience without theoretical knowledge means being detached from the fundamentals. Calculation refers to the material balance of the process. Energy balance, calculations for various devices, some theoretical calculations related to pipes, such as pipe diameter and pressure loss. Stress of the scaffold, etc. It is useful to know more about the basic design specifications for pumps, valves, fans, and so on, as well as the operation of various towers and tanks used in the chemical industry.

Doing design is a very complex task! It can’t be done in just a few years! If you are to take this path, there is certainly a lot to learn ; But if you can design things on your own in the future, that would be great!
1. First of all, one must be mentally prepared; working together in a design firm during design tasks, and working overtime is something that happens regularly; 2. Preparation of basic knowledge – the guys upstairs have pretty much covered it all ; The design process is roughly as follows: PFD (simulation is used; manual calculations are an exception, but extensive knowledge of chemical engineering is required) --> PID --> Setting conditions (up to this point it’s a technical task that demonstrates skill level) --> Accepting feedback and starting pipe installation (a physical labor task) --> Storage -- Summary. If it turns out that the necessary knowledge isn’t sufficient, that’s okay; one just has to learn on the spot – it’s more demanding, that’s all. 3. If you have a very distinct personality or prefer to work alone, it is advised not to work in a design firm, as it can be quite frustrating.

I downloaded a few e-books – process design manuals, design calculations, and things like that – and realized that I lack basic knowledge in chemistry engineering. Now I see there’s so much I need to learn... There are many things I want to learn: the process simulation software mentioned above, process design manuals, as well as many other books on process design that I’ve downloaded. It seems like there’s too much to take in; I don’t know where to start Perhaps it’s because they’re eager to change jobs and want to get a basic understanding of process engineering design as soon as possible; moreover, their working hours are limited.
