How do the opening degrees of the valves at the boiler outlet drum and the main steam line change during operation and production? Also, should this valve be operated by the boiler crew or the process crew? I hope all the fellow sailors passing by will feel free to share their thoughts
It should be the responsibility of the boiler operators; we use steam and only need to know the process parameters, nothing else
I’m not quite sure what the issue of valve opening degree variation mentioned by the poster means, and it’s not easy to answer. As for whether this valve should be operated and managed by boiler staff or process engineers, it depends on the division of responsibilities and coordination within each company; it can be under the responsibility of either group. Here, it is managed by our boiler staff (in fact, we don’t have a distinction between boiler staff and process engineers here).
It should be operated by process technicians, but administratively it falls under the boiler room. This prevents a disruption in communication between the process personnel and the boiler room, effectively reducing boiler overpressure accidents. During normal operations, process engineers are generally able to keep track of the condition of the boiler room and adjust the valves accordingly. On the other hand, due to the high workload in the boiler room, it is not possible to monitor the progress of production processes in real time; therefore, it is necessary for process engineers to adjust the valves based on the condition of the boiler room.

The valves in a steam drum include inlet valves and outlet valves. To meet the requirements of various systems, the inlet valve is usually kept fully open, and the other outlet valves should also be fully open, as the main function of a steam drum is to distribute steam rather than regulate flow; flow regulation is carried out by the terminal valves in each system. The steam outlet valves of the steam drum are generally operated by the staff from the various systems that use steam.
It should be the boiler operators who open and close the valves, as they know when steam is needed and when it isn’t; process engineers cannot always be in the boiler room, and opening and closing valves is part of the boiler operators’ responsibilities.
There are control buttons on the boiler control panel, which are used by the boiler operator to manage operations. The outlet valve for the boiler’s steam is usually kept in an open position and does not require adjustment.
