On April 7, 2009, the inauguration ceremony for the \"Center for Energy Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences\" was held at the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Shi Erwei, Vice President and member of the Party Leadership Group of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Xia Geng, Deputy Secretary of the Qingdao Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Qingdao, jointly unveiled the plaque for the \"Center for Energy Science and Technology Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences\". Qi Qiang, Director of the Bureau for Local Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Bao Xinhe, President of the Shenyang Branch, Wang Qingli, former President of the same branch, Zhai Luning, Director of the Science and Technology Department of Shandong Province, as well as Zhang Huichu*, Member of the Qingdao Municipal Party Committee and Vice Mayor, attended the unveiling ceremony. Officials from the Bureau of Local Cooperation, Bureau of Human Resources and Education, Bureau of High-Tech Research and Development of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as the Shenyang Branch; the Department of Science and Technology of Shandong Province; relevant departments in Qingdao City such as the **Inspection Office, the Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, the Municipal Development and Reform Commission, the Municipal Finance Bureau, the Municipal Construction Committee, the Municipal Planning Bureau, the Municipal Land and Resources Bureau, the Municipal Human Resources Bureau, the Municipal Labor and Social Security Bureau, and the Municipal Education Bureau; as well as representatives from Laoshan District**, together with members of the organizing team and all staff of the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocesses of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the inauguration ceremony. The ceremony was presided over by Bao Xinhe, director of the Shenyang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Following the unveiling ceremony, Vice President Shi Erwei and Mayor Xia Geng, among others, visited the newly built campus of the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In accordance with the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Agreement between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the People’s Government of Qingdao, signed in Beijing on March 3, the two parties will jointly establish the \"Chinese Academy of Sciences Center for Energy Science and Technology\", which will comprise 3 research institutes and 1 service center, namely the Institute of Bioenergy and Processes, the Institute of Biomaterials, the Institute of Energy Application Technologies, and the Science and Technology R&D Service Center. “The priority development areas of the “Center” include ten research fields: biological resources, biocatalysis and transformation, biofuels, bio-based chemicals, biomedicine, bio-based materials, energy-saving technologies, energy storage technologies, non-carbon energy sources, and clean processes. “The establishment of this “center” will facilitate the recruitment and training of high-level talents and teams in scientific and technological innovation, as well as the development of core technologies and equipment with independent intellectual property rights. Through joint efforts by government agencies, academia, and industry, it will supply society and enterprises with high-caliber professionals and technological achievements, thereby enhancing the independent innovation capabilities of enterprises and industries ; It facilitates the development of advanced renewable energy technologies, energy-saving technologies, and clean production and utilization technologies, thereby creating new sources of economic growth in the energy sector including the equipment manufacturing industry. It also helps to transform China’s traditional high-energy-consuming and highly polluting industries into low-energy-consuming, cleaner industries, thus gradually achieving the goals of restructuring China’s industrial structure ; It helps to promote the development of emerging high-tech industries in the Qingdao area, such as new energy, biomaterials, and biomedicine, thereby creating new points of growth and drivers for regional economic development, and directly or indirectly boosting the economic progress of regions like Qingdao.
