The First China IGCC Co-generation Summit was held in Shanghai. From March 26 to 27, 2009, the first China IGCC Co-generation Summit, organized jointly by the Shanghai Petroleum Society, the Shanghai Energy Research Association, and Yahua Consulting Company, was held in Pudong, Shanghai. By drawing on and exchanging experiences from similar industries abroad, in-depth discussions were held on various aspects including China’s energy strategy, technological innovation in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), the latest progress in IGCC project construction, the design and optimization of cogeneration schemes, as well as the utilization of carbon dioxide. Experts and scholars from institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Tsinghua University, Yankuang Group, Fujian United Petrochemical, Huaneng Green Coal Power, Shanghai Huayi Group, Yahua Consulting, German Wood Engineering, General Electric, Siemens, and ConocoPhillips delivered keynote speeches at the conference. Xiao Yunhan, deputy director of the Bureau of High-Tech of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, delivered a report titled “Technology Research, Development, and Demonstration of IGCC Co-Generation”. Ni Weidou, Chairman of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, former Vice President of Tsinghua University, and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a report on “Multi-product systems centered on coal gasification”. Academician Weng Shile, Director of the Shanghai Center of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, President of the Shanghai Energy Research Association, and former President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, delivered a report on the \"Development Strategy for Gasification Combined Heat and Power in Shanghai – IGCC.\" Zhang Peizhang, Director of the Technical Economics Committee of Shanghai Huayi Group, former Chairman of Huayi Group, and President of the Shanghai Chemical Industry Society, delivered a report titled “Thoughts on Developing a Coal-based Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle Demonstration Base at Huayi”. As a director of the Shanghai Petroleum Society, Xia Lei, general manager of Shanghai Yahua Consulting Company, delivered a report on \"Coal-based cogeneration and carbon dioxide management.\" In addition, the project leaders from Huaneng Green Coal Power Company and Fujian United Petrochemicals presented information on the progress of the IGCC projects in Tianjin and Fujian, respectively. Over 200 representatives from various departments such as the Shanghai Development and Reform Commission, the Shanghai Economic Commission, and the Pudong New Area Development and Reform Commission, as well as from regions like Xinjiang and Shandong, attended the conference. Additionally, representatives from large enterprises in the fields of electricity, petroleum, petrochemicals, and coal processing, including Huaneng, Datang, Huadian, Guodian, China Power Investment, China Guangdong Nuclear Power, Shenhua Guohua Power, China National Petroleum Corporation, Sinopec, China National Offshore Oil Corporation, Shanghai Electric, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan, Xinwen Mining, and Jinmei Group, were also present. During the conference, the delegates conducted on-site visits to co-production facilities and large-scale energy and chemical complexes, visiting the Huayi Wujing facility as well as the Shanghai Chemical Industry Zone. This event was funded by the science popularization funds of Pudong New Area, and received strong support from the Academic Societies Department of the Pudong New Area Association for Science and Technology. It is understood that as an important high-tech hub in the country, Pudong New Area not only provides a favorable platform for research and development as well as industrialization of related industries, but also serves as an important venue for high-level academic discussions on advanced technologies and their applications. IGCC cogeneration, centered on gasification, has attracted widespread attention from industry professionals both at home and abroad. IGCC technology can improve efficiency and reduce emissions, and it serves as an important foundation for future advanced integrated energy production systems (electricity, H2, chemicals, and liquid fuels). The combination of IGCC power generation with carbon capture and storage (CCS) will enable both improved energy efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. Combining IGCC power generation with coal chemical engineering to co-produce fuels or chemical products such as methanol will provide a new pathway for future energy and chemical industry hubs and development. According to a research report by Yaha Consulting, there are 17 IGCC power plants in operation worldwide, with a total installed capacity of 4270 MW ； A total of 55 IGCC cogeneration projects are planned to be built. The total installed capacity is approximately 13,000 MW. Among them, the Yankuang Group in Shandong, China, operates the world’s first demonstration plant for IGCC-based co-production of methanol and acetic acid; it has an installed capacity of 80 MW and is capable of producing 300,000 tons of methanol and 220,000 tons of acetic acid. The facility was completed and put into operation at the end of 2005, achieving stable production for three consecutive years and yielding good economic benefits. In China, there are currently 16 IGCC or cogeneration projects under construction; among them, Fujian United Petrochemical will begin operations in mid-2009, while Huaneng Green Coal Power is expected to be completed and put into operation in 2010.
