Recently, due to considerations such as energy conservation and cost reduction. Water conservation is required; as a result, after increasing the concentration ratio of the circulating water, severe scaling occurs in the coolers. Circulating water contains a lot of impurities. The cooling water of the pump is severely scaled. Let’s discuss how to handle it, what problems have occurred, and what suggestions there are
There is a limit to the concentration ratio of circulating water; it cannot be increased too much, generally not exceeding 3.0.
The temperature of the cooled medium should preferably not exceed 100°C; otherwise, calcium and magnesium ions in the circulating water are prone to cause scaling.
Circulating water cannot be regarded as the key focus for energy savings; a moderate approach is sufficient. Otherwise, problems will arise everywhere due to scaling, which is very troublesome. Moreover, the energy consumption associated with circulating water accounts for a very small proportion of the total energy consumption. Which is more cost-effective: using a small amount of such water or facing continuous issues with the equipment or even its damage?
Circulating water is a key aspect of water conservation; the concentration ratio can reach 3-4 in the oil refining process and 5 in the chemical industry. This requires good chemicals, proper monitoring and management, effective use of side filtration equipment, prevention of illegal discharges, and timely identification and repair of leakage points.
Analyze the alkalinity and calcium hardness of the circulating water to determine their combined value; this will help identify what type of water quality you have. In industrial design, the concentration factor is determined based on the water quality (usually, the sum of calcium hardness and alkalinity after concentration is less than 1000). Of course, this also depends on the scale and corrosion inhibitors used. The maximum concentration factor that can be applied with these inhibitors for use as make-up water in such water conditions can be determined by calculating the ultimate carbonate alkalinity. If this value is below the designated level, it is not acceptable, and the chemicals need to be replaced.
There is no good way to deal with scaling; acid cleaning is the only option
Install a descaling unit before the circulating water inlet pump area to acid-clean the cooling water lines of the fouled pumps.
Saving water and reducing emissions are the top priorities now; everyone is trying their best to save water! In winter, the inlet to the cooler is almost completely closed. However, there are significant drawbacks to this approach of saving water and reducing emissions; due to the reduced flow rate, scaling occurs easily, and backwashing becomes necessary in summer. Water conservation should be done in a sensible manner.
Circulating water is reused, so there is little waste. However, if the concentration ratio is too high, it can cause significant damage to the machinery. It should be discharged when necessary; even when chemicals are added, discharge still depends on the concentration ratio
I have physical-type equipment for circulating water descaling, rust removal, and corrosion prevention, which can help save energy and reduce emissions.
